When your innovative construction product isn't covered by a harmonised European standard (hEN), a European Technical Assessment (ETA) provides the pathway to CE marking and EU market access.

    What is an ETA?

A European Technical Assessment is a documented assessment of the performance of a construction product in relation to its essential characteristics. ETAs are issued by Technical Assessment Bodies (TABs) based on European Assessment Documents (EADs).

When Do You Need an ETA?

    An ETA is required when:

    • Your product is not covered by a harmonised standard
    • Your product differs significantly from what's covered by existing standards
    • You have an innovative product with novel characteristics
    • You want to demonstrate specific performance not covered by hENs

    The ETA Process

The ETA route involves several stages:

    1. Application: Submit to a TAB with product documentation
    2. EAD development: If no suitable EAD exists, one is developed
    3. Assessment: Product testing and evaluation against the EAD
    4. ETA issuance: Documented assessment valid for 5 years
    5. CE marking: After successful AVCP by an accredited certification body
